footline WPL-02E: I-Usted Relationship and Recognition Theory (V4.0)
abstract It places the I-Usted relationship in dialogue with seven philosophical traditions of recognition theory – Hegel, Honneth, Ricœur, Ubuntu, Buddhist ethics, Confucianism, and Derrida – and demonstrates that non-reciprocal recognition is a trans-cultural category of ethical acknowledgment. The document applies the I-Usted relationship to six clinical contexts (dementia, vegetative state, profound intellectual disability, terminal illness, severe psychiatric disorders with communicative incapacity, and early childhood) and shows that it is the only appropriate ethical stance toward subjects who cannot respond. The findings are grounded in the case of Yenifer/Yenny (structural dissociation type 2) and serve as a philosophical foundation for the Lighthouse Strategy. The findings apply to both models (type 2α and type 2β) unless stated otherwise.

Kapitel 1 von WPL-02E
## 1. Introduction

This document is designed for philosophers, ethicists, clinicians, and students concerned with the philosophical foundation of non-reciprocal recognition. It deepens WPL-01 (Beyond I-Thou and I-It – Introduction to the I-Usted Relationship (Ich-Sie/Ich-Er/Yo-Usted)) by summarizing the statements of numerous WA documents from Volume 17 of the WA Corpus.

### 1.1 From Clinical Necessity to Philosophical Deepening

The I-Usted relationship (WPL-01D) was introduced as a third dialogical category beyond Buber's (1923) I-Thou and I-It – as an attitude of recognition without reciprocity toward a subject that cannot respond. This category is not only a clinical necessity in accompanying people with structural dissociation Type 2, but also a philosophical challenge: it forces us to rethink the relationship between recognition and reciprocity.

Western recognition theory – from Hegel through Honneth to Ricœur – has described reciprocal recognition as constitutive for subject formation, social order, and psychological health. However, it has systematically overlooked the case of non-reciprocal recognition – the recognition of a subject that cannot respond. The I-Usted relationship is the necessary complement to this theory for this case. It is not a contradiction to reciprocal recognition, but its limit figure: it shows that recognition is possible and required even where reciprocity is structurally impossible.

The present document deepens this philosophical foundation. It places the I-Usted relationship in dialogue with the most important theories of recognition – from Hegel's struggle for recognition through Honneth's three-level model to Ricœur's gift-model – and extends them with intercultural perspectives from African Ubuntu philosophy, Buddhist ethics, Confucianism, and Derrida's deconstruction of hospitality.

The order of the seven philosophical traditions follows a dual movement: It begins with classical Western recognition theory (Hegel, Honneth, Ricœur), which traces the development from reciprocal recognition to the gift as an alternative. It expands this perspective with three non-Western traditions (Ubuntu, Buddhism, Confucianism) that establish non-reciprocal recognition as a transcultural category. It concludes with Derrida's deconstruction of hospitality, which marks the aporia of non-reciprocal recognition as a persistent tension – a tension that the I-Usted relationship does not dissolve but endures.

The explanations apply to both models (Type 2α and Type 2β), unless otherwise noted.

### 1.2 Questions of the Document

1. How does the I-Usted relationship relate to Hegel's dialectic of the struggle for recognition? – Hegel describes the struggle for recognition as a struggle for reciprocity. The I-Usted relationship shows that recognition is possible even where the struggle cannot take place – because the counterpart cannot enter the struggle. Is the I-Usted relationship a *suspended dialectic* or a *different form of recognition*?

2. How can Honneth's three-level model of recognition (love, respect, esteem) be expanded to include non-reciprocal recognition? – Honneth's theory of recognition is oriented toward reciprocal relationships. The I-Usted relationship shows that recognition is possible even where none of the three spheres applies. Is the I-Usted relationship a *fourth sphere* of recognition – or a *transversal category* that traverses all three spheres?

3. What role does Ricœur's phenomenology of the capable human being play for the I-Usted relationship? – Ricœur describes the human being as a capable being (*saying, acting, narrating, attributing to oneself*). The I-Usted relationship shows that the human being also deserves recognition when they are no longer capable. How does Ricœur's concept of the capable human being change when we consider the *incapable human being*?

4. What does the I-Usted relationship mean for Ubuntu philosophy? – Ubuntu states: *"I am because we are."* The I-Usted relationship shows that this mutuality is not always given. Can Ubuntu also grasp the case where the Other cannot respond? Or does the I-Usted relationship require an expansion of Ubuntu philosophy?

5. What does the I-Usted relationship mean for Buddhist ethics? – Buddhist ethics of compassion (*karuṇā*) is not bound to reciprocity. It is the attitude of compassion for all sentient beings, regardless of their ability to respond. The I-Usted relationship finds its natural correspondence here. How can the Buddhist practice of compassion be made fruitful for clinical accompaniment?

6. What role does Derrida's deconstruction of hospitality play for the I-Usted relationship? – Derrida describes *unconditional hospitality* as a hospitality that expects no return. The I-Usted relationship is such an unconditional hospitality – the reception of the Other without expecting a response. How does the I-Usted relationship relate to Derrida's concept of *hospitality without condition*?

7. How do the various philosophical traditions (Hegel, Honneth, Ricœur, Ubuntu, Buddhism, Confucianism, Derrida) relate to each other – and how can they be integrated into a coherent theory of non-reciprocal recognition? – The I-Usted relationship is not an eclectic collection but a systematic category. The various traditions are not competing explanations but complementary perspectives on the same phenomenon. How can they be integrated into a coherent theory of non-reciprocal recognition?

8. How can the I-Usted relationship be conceptually grasped from the notions of *being human* and *person* – and why is this distinction of central importance for clinical ethics?

9. In which five to six clinical contexts does the I-Usted relationship become the only appropriate ethical stance – and what common structure connects these contexts? (Dementia, vegetative state, profound intellectual disability, terminal illness, severe psychiatric disorders, early childhood)

### 1.3 Theses of the Document

Thesis 1 – The I-Usted relationship as a systematic extension of recognition theory:

The I-Usted relationship is the necessary complement to classical recognition theory (Hegel, Honneth) for the case of non-reciprocal recognition – it shows that recognition is possible and required even where reciprocity is structurally impossible.

Thesis 2 – Ricœur's gift as a bridge to non-reciprocal recognition:

Ricœur's concept of the gift – a gift without expectation of return – is the philosophical counterpart to the I-Usted relationship: the companion gives their presence without expecting a response.

Thesis 3 – The I-Usted relationship as a transcultural category:

The I-Usted relationship is not an exclusively Western category; it finds correspondences in Ubuntu, in Buddhism, in Confucianism, and in Derrida – and is therefore a transcultural category of non-reciprocal recognition.

Thesis 4 – The I-Usted relationship as a universal ethical category in clinical practice:

The I-Usted relationship is a universal ethical stance that, in six clinical contexts – dementia, vegetative state, profound intellectual disability, terminal illness, severe psychiatric disorders with communicative incapacity, and early childhood – is the appropriate stance toward subjects who cannot respond.

### 1.4 The Internal Logic of the Chapter Order

The selection of traditions follows three criteria:

1. Relevance to non-reciprocal recognition: Each of the seven traditions offers an independent perspective on the question of how recognition without reciprocity is possible.

2. Representativeness: The seven traditions cover a broad spectrum – from classical philosophy (Hegel) through critical theory (Honneth) and hermeneutics (Ricœur) to three non-Western traditions (Ubuntu, Buddhism, Confucianism) and deconstruction (Derrida).

3. Complementarity: The seven traditions are not competing explanations but complementary perspectives on the same phenomenon. Each illuminates a different aspect of non-reciprocal recognition.

#### Part 1: Classical Western Recognition Theory (Hegel → Honneth → Ricœur)

These three thinkers form the canonical development of recognition theory in the West:

1. Hegel (1807) – The origin: recognition as a struggle for reciprocity. The dialectic of master and servant is the fundamental figure from which all later theories proceed – either as confirmation or as critique.

2. Honneth (1992) – The systematization: Honneth unfolds Hegel's approach into a three-level theory of recognition (love, rights, solidarity). He is the most prominent contemporary representative of the Hegelian tradition.

3. Ricœur (2004) – The turning point: Ricœur breaks with the struggle-paradigm and introduces the gift as an alternative. He is the first to systematically question reciprocity and describe mutuality as a peaceful alternative. He is the bridge to non-reciprocal recognition.

#### Part 2: The Intercultural Expansion (Ubuntu → Buddhism → Confucianism)

These three traditions are non-Western alternatives to Western recognition theory. They show that non-reciprocal recognition is not an exclusively Western invention:

4. Ubuntu – The African perspective: community as the foundation of the person. The proximity to the I-Usted relationship lies in care for the vulnerable.

5. Buddhism – The South Asian perspective: compassion without attachment. Karuṇā is the purest form of non-reciprocal recognition.

6. Confucianism – The East Asian perspective: recognition without expectation of recognition in return. The asymmetrical recognition of the virtuous person.

#### Part 3: Radical Deconstruction (Derrida)

7. Derrida – Deconstruction: Derrida presents hospitality as an irresolvable aporia. He is the most radical thinker of non-reciprocal recognition because he shows that it is impossible – and that precisely in this lies its ethical power. He is the conclusion of the movement because he deconstructs the entire tradition and marks the aporia as a persistent tension.

Table 1.1: The Dialectical Structure in Overview

| Phase | Thinker | Movement | Core |
|-------|--------|----------|------|
| 1. Thesis | Hegel, Honneth | Reciprocal recognition as normative ideal | Struggle for recognition |
| 2. Antithesis | Ricœur, Ubuntu, Buddhism, Confucianism | Non-reciprocal recognition as alternative | Gift, compassion, asymmetry |
| 3. Synthesis | Derrida | The aporia as persistent tension | Unconditional hospitality |

Kapitel 1 von WPL-02D

(Demenz, Wachkoma, schwere Intelligenzminderung, terminale Erkrankungen, schwere psychische Erkrankungen, frühe Kindheit)

These 3 – Die Ich-Sie-Beziehung als transkulturelle Kategorie:

#### Teil 2: Die interkulturelle Erweiterung (Ubuntu → Buddhismus → Konfuzianismus)

6. Konfuzianismus – Die ostasiatische Perspektive: Anerkennung ohne Erwartung einer Gegenerkennung. Die asymmetrische Anerkennung des tugendhaften Menschen.

#### Teil 3: Die radikale Dekonstruktion (Derrida)

| Phase | Denker | Bewegung | Kern |
|-------|--------|----------|------|
| 1. These | Hegel, Honneth | Reziproke Anerkennung als normatives Ideal | Kampf um Anerkennung |
| 2. Antithese | Ricœur, Ubuntu, Buddhismus, Konfuzianismus | Nicht-reziproke Anerkennung als Alternative | Gabe, Mitgefühl, Asymmetrie |
| 3. Synthese | Derrida | Die Aporie als bleibende Spannung | Bedingungslose Gastfreundschaft |

Kapitel 1 von WPL-02L

#### Parte 2: La ampliación intercultural (Ubuntu → Budismo → Confucianismo)

| 2. Antítesis | Ricœur, Ubuntu, Budismo, Confucianismo | Reconocimiento no recíproco como alternativa | Don, compasión, asimetría |
| 3. Síntesis | Derrida | La aporía como tensión persistente | Hospitalidad incondicional |

Kapitel 1 von WPL-02R

2. Honneth'in üç seviyeli tanınma modeli (sevgi, saygı, değer) karşılıksız tanımayı içerecek şekilde nasıl genişletilebilir? – Honneth'in tanınma teorisi karşılıklı ilişkilere yöneliktir.

1. Karşılıksız tanınmaya uygunluk: Yedi geleneğin her biri, karşılıklılık olmadan tanınmanın nasıl mümkün olduğu sorusuna bağımsız bir perspektif sunar.

2. Temsil edicilik: Yedi gelenek geniş bir yelpazeyi kapsar – klasik felsefeden (Hegel) eleştirel teoriye (Honneth) ve hermeneutiğe (Ricœur) kadar, üç Batı dışı gelenek (Ubuntu, Budizm, Konfüçyüsçülük) ve dekonstrüksiyon (Derrida).
